10 Intersections Between Podcasts, Audiobooks, and Storytelling at Large Listen to this post Half of Americans have listened to an audiobook, and the same percentage have listened to a podcast according to a 2019 survey conducted by Edison Research and Triton Digital. This was the first year that the audience for both podcasts and audiobooks reached 50% listenership. According to the Audio Publishers Association’s press release on the research, there is a clear crossover audience between the two: 55% of audiobook listeners had also listened to a podcast in the month surveyed. This makes sense, as both podcasts and audiobooks are auditory ways of consuming information and stories. But beyond the numbers, I wanted to know: how else do the two industries intersect, feeding one into the other? In what ways do they amplify each other rather than simply competing for listeners? I’ve rounded up ten ways in which podcasts, audiobooks, and oral storytelling at large are interconnected, particularly now that more and more print books have an accompanying audio version published simultaneously. (Which is why, when available, I am linking directly to the audiobook version of any titles mentioned.) 1) Podcasts Promoting Authors and Books I once heard a book publicist say that no one sells more books than Terry Gross, host of NPR’s Fresh Air. While yes, this program is a radio show, it is also recorded and distributed across podcast platforms. As a growing area of media, podcasts serve as an important way to spread the word about a book its authorâ€"the story about the story, if you will. Interviews spots and mentions can be an important part of a book’s comprehensive promotional plan. Some dive into specific genresâ€"For Real for nonfiction, Read or Dead for mysteries and thrillers, and the self-explanatory When in Romance, Hey YA, SFF Yeah! and Kidlit These Daysâ€"whereas others discuss book news and culture or offer custom recommendations to listeners. Ours are certainly not the only ones, thoughâ€"here are 11 more book podcasts. 3) Book Club Podcasts There’s also a delightful sub-genre of bookish podcasts that feature the hosts reading and discussing books together, often inviting listeners to read along with them. One of my favorites is Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, in which two Harvard Divinity School grads guide listeners chapter by chapter through the Harry Potter series, treating it as a religious text. In the Banging Book Club podcast (now concluded), three YouTubers read and discussed books about sex and gender. There’s also By the Book, in which the hosts read self-help books and try out the lifestyles they prescribe to find out what works. 4) Authors Starting Podcasts Writers are storytellers, so it comes as no surprise that countless authors are starting their own podcasts. In 2018, U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith started her daily poetry podcast The Slowdown. Other poets are also working in the podcast spaceâ€"Tommy Pico (author of IRL, Nature Poem, and Junk) co-hosts the roundtable podcast Food 4 Thot with several of his writing friends, and Franny Choi (Soft Science) and Danez Smith (Don’t Call Us Dead) co-host the VS. poetry podcast. In April, writer Roxane Gay launched “the black feminist podcast of your dreams” called Hear to Slay for subscribers on Luminary. My personal favorite is YA novelist John Green’s The Anthropocene Reviewed, in which he “reviews facets of the human centered-planet on a five-star scale” in mini essays that braid together research and memoir. My roommate is a big fan of  Writing Excuses, a 15-minute discussion of various writing topics hosted by sci-fi/fantasy authors Dan Wells, Brandon Sanderson, and M ary Robinette Kowal, with occasional guests. 5) Podcasts That Are Kinda Like Audiobooks Some podcasts are testing the boundaries between audiobook and radio drama. A prime example of this is S-Town, a 7 “chapter” true crime podcast from the creators of This American Life and Serial that won a 2017 Peabody Award. As stated on the award’s website, S-Town “breaks new ground for the medium by creating the first true audio novel, a nonfiction biography constructed in the style and form of a 7-chapter novel.” Fiction podcasts are also working in the space of the audio-original novel. Think of it this way: Charles Dickens first published his books in serial print form; creators of serial fiction podcasts like  Tanis, Wolf 359, and The Walk are doing something similar. 6) Books Based on Podcasts…that Become Audiobooks Sometimes, a popular podcast becomes the basis for a book. The McElroy brother’s Dungeons Dragons role-playing podcast was adapted to a graphic novel, The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins. Though this was not adapted to an audiobook (given the reliance on illustrations), many other podcasts-turned-books are, such as Welcome to Nightvale and Alice Isn’t Dead. A nonfiction example is YouTuber Gaby Dunn’s Bad with Money*, which now exists as a podcast, book, and audiobook. Even when the book comes full circle back to the audio format, it still usually offers listeners a new experience. While Mike Rowe’s forthcoming book The Way I Heard It* started as a collection of podcast transcripts, he says on his website that it evolved to include elements of memoir and unrecorded stories told in the style of his podcast. The hosts of My Favorite Murder  do something similar in  their book Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered, building on elements of memoir and self-help. (*Disclaimer: I work for the audio publisher of these two titles, but opinions are mine.) 7) Podcasts Based on a Book Starting a podcast inspired by a book offers authors a new medium to continue exploring the same ideas. It also serves as a way to expand their brand and continue promoting the book. Gretchen Rubins, author of The Happiness Project, now co-hosts a podcast with Elizabeth Craft called Happier. The 2005 book Freakonomics also inspired a weekly podcast of the same name, which is now approaching its 400th episode. After publishing Doing Itâ€"a teen guide to sex and relationshipsâ€"author and YouTuber Hannah Witton launched a podcast of the same name, in which she continues the conversation started on her channel and in her book. 8) Audiobooks with Podcast Elements Some authors are starting to use podcast transcripts as a narrative form. An example of this is the YA thriller Sadie by Courtney Summers. Half of the story is told in the style of a true crime podcast about the unsolved murder of a dead girl and her missing older sister, and the other half is narrated in the first person by the missing girl herself. In the audiobook version, the podcast elements were recorded to sound as real as possible, using a full cast of narrators and sound effects to set the scenes. 9) Podcasters Getting Book Deals Editors and literary agents have long been scouting out potential book projects from interesting people with something to say and a platform to promote itâ€"and podcasters are no exception. The resulting book is not always directly tied to the podcast, however. Vanessa Zoltan, co-founder and co-host of Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, recently shared news of landing a book deal to write about Jane Eyre  as a sacred text.  This was the topic of Zoltans thesis at Harvard Divinity School, and also the inspiration for her Harry Potter podcast. But everyone has a story to tell, and that is what oral historians aim to preserve. Earlier this year, I attended the audio culture festival On Air Fest, which highlighted two oral history podcasts working to share those stories with a broader audience: Our Streets, Our Stories (produced by the Brooklyn Public Library) and Flatbush + Main (produced by the Brooklyn Historical Society). Whether streamed to 10 listeners or 10,000, these podcasts amplify the storiesâ€"and the voicesâ€"that often go overlooked by traditional media. Even oral histories can come full circle though, as is the case with the book Listening Is an Act of Love, a compilation of oral histories compiled by the StoryCorps organizationâ€"and available as audiobook. How Planet Hunters Search for New Planets

The modern age of astronomy has brought a new set of scientists to our attention: the planet hunters. These people, often working in teams using ground-based and space-based telescopes are turning up planets by the dozens out there in the galaxy. In return, those newly found worlds are expanding our understanding of how worlds form around other stars and how many extrasolar planets, often referred to as exoplanets, exist in the Milky Way galaxy. The Hunt for Other Worlds around the Sun Searching for planets began in our own solar system, with the discovery of worlds beyond the familiar naked-eye planets of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune were found in the 1800s, and Pluto wasnt discovered until the early years of the 20th century. These days, the hunt is on for other dwarf planets out in the far reaches of the solar system. One team, led by astronomer Mike Brown of CalTech continually looks for worlds in the Kuiper Belt (a distant realm of the solar system), and have notched their belts with a number of claims. So far, they have found the world Eris (which is larger than Pluto), Haumea, Sedna, and dozens of other trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Their hunt for a Planet X sparked worldwide attention, but as of mid-2017, nothing has been seen.   Looking for Exoplanets The search for worlds around other stars began in 1988 when astronomers found hints of planets around two stars and a pulsar. The first confirmed exoplanet around a main-sequence star occurred in 1995 when astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz of the University of Geneva announced the discovery of a planet around the star 51 Pegasi. Their find was proof that planets orbited sun-like stars in the galaxy. After that, the hunt was on, and astronomers began finding more planets. They used several methods, including the radial velocity technique. It looks for the wobble in a stars spectrum, induced by the slight gravitational tug of a planet as it orbits the star. They also used the dimming of starlight produced when a planet eclipses its star.   A number of groups have been involved in surveying stars to find their planets. At last count, 45 ground-based planet-hunting projects have found more than 450 worlds. One of them, the Probing Lensing Anomalies Network, which has merged with another network called MicroFUN Collaboration, looks for gravitational lensing anomalies. These happen when stars are lensed by massive bodies (such as other stars)  or planets. Another group of astronomers formed a group called the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), which used ground based instruments to look for stars, as well. Planet Hunting Enters the Space Age Hunting for planets around other stars is a painstaking process. It doesnt help that Earths atmosphere makes the view of such tiny objects very difficult to obtain. Stars are large and bright; planets are small and dim. They can get lost in the glow of starlight, so direct images are incredibly tough to obtain, especially from the ground. So, space-based observations provide a better view and allow instruments and cameras to make the painstaking measurements involved in modern planet-hunting.   Hubble Space Telescope has made many stellar observations and  has been used to image planets around other stars, as has the Spitzer Space Telescope. By far the most productive planet hunter has been the Kepler Telescope. It was launched in 2009 and spent several years searching out planets in a small area of the sky in the direction of the constellations Cygnus, Lyra, and Draco. It found thousands of planet candidates before it ran into difficulties with its stabilization gyros. It now hunts for planets in other areas of the sky, and the Kepler database of confirmed planets contains more than 4,000 worlds. Based on Kepler discoveries, which were aimed mostly at trying to find Earth-size planets, it has been estimated that nearly every Sun-like star in the galaxy (plus many other types of stars) has at least one planet. Kepler also found many other larger planets, often referred to as super Jupiters and Hot Jupiters and Super Neptunes.   Beyond Kepler While Kepler has been one of the most productive planet-hunting scopes in history, it will eventually stop working. At that point, other missions will take over, including the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which will be launched in 2018, and the James Webb Space Telescope, which will also head to space in 2018. After that, the Planetary Transits and Oscillations of Stars mission (PLATO), being built by the European Space Agency, will begin its hunt sometime in the 2020s, followed by WFIRST (the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope), which will hunt for planets and search for dark matter, beginning sometime in the mid 2020s.   Each planet hunting mission, whether from the ground or in space, is crewed by teams of astronomers who are experts at the search for planets. Not only will they look for planets, but eventually, they hope to use their telescopes and spacecraft to get data that will reveal the conditions on those planets. The hope is to look for worlds that, like Earth, could support life.

What Is Registered Provisional Immigrant (RPI) Status

Under the comprehensive immigration reform legislation passed by the U.S. Senate in June 2013, Registered Provisional Immigrant status would allow immigrants living in the country illegally to remain here without fear of deportation or removal. Immigrants who are in deportation or removal proceedings and are eligible to receive RPI must be given the opportunity to get it, according to the Senate’s bill. Unauthorized immigrants could apply and receive the RPI status for a six-year period under the proposal, and then have the option to renew it for an additional six years. RPI status would put unauthorized immigrants on the path to green card status and permanent residency, and ultimately U.S. citizenship after 13 years. It’s important to remember, however, that the Senate’s bill is not law but proposed legislation that must also be passed by the U.S. House and then signed by the president. Yet, many lawmakers in both bodies and in both parties believe that some form of RPI status will be included in any final comprehensive immigration reform plan that becomes law. Also, the RPI status is likely to be linked to border security triggers, provisions in the legislation that require the government to meet certain thresholds to thwart illegal immigration before the path to citizenship can open for the country’s 11 million unauthorized immigrants. RPI won’t take effect until border security is tightened. Here are the eligibility requirements, provisions, and benefits for RPI status in the Senate’s legislation: The immigrant must have resided in the United States before Dec. 31, 2011, and maintained a continuous presence here.Applicants must pay a $500 penalty fee (except for DREAM Act eligible students, those unauthorized immigrants who were childhood arrivals), as well as paying assessed taxes.Applicants must not have been convicted of an aggravated felony, a felony or three more misdemeanors. Theodore Huebner Roethke was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Otto Roethke and Helen Huebner. As a student at Saginaws Arthur Hill High School, Roethke demonstrated early promise in a speech on the Junior Red Cross that was published in twenty-six languages. However, the death of his father from cancer in 1923 was a loss that would powerfully shape Roethkes psychic and creative lives. My expectations of an AA meeting come from movies and TV shows. I have always thought that the meetings were long – at least 2 hours. I also expect there to be a small amount of people at the meeting. I think that the majority of the people at the meeting will be men in there 40s or 50s. At the meeting, I expect everyone to be sitting in a circle. I have always thought that the people at AA meetings do not want to be there. A piece of dirt is inserted into an oyster’s environment where it doesn’t belong. The oyster can either respond by dying, or by accepting and surrounding the sand with care. With continual care, the oyster turns the small speck of dirt into a beautiful pearl. The Scarlet Letter is a story of how one woman takes a scandalous event and rather than allowing the event to define her, she, by constant kindness, turns her life and her child into something of worth. The theme I am focusing on in The Scarlet Letter is the person and the concept which embodies courage and redemption. Similarly, Hester decides that after being socially shunned she would have to daily overcome the negative statements from around her and the negative thoughts within her. Hester shows courage under all the stigma when she entered the Governor’s hall (Hawthorne 98). Even though people are judgmental and cruel, she stays strong. This is a positive example of courage just as when an oyster accepts and nurtures a piece of dirt. A negative example of courage is Dimmesdale and his deceitful heart toward his sin. He is like the oyster that doesn’t accept the piece of sand and dies because of the intrusion. He hides the fact that he is also a guilty party in the sin and as a result, he can’t forgive himself and slowly withers away under the social pressure (Hawthorne 238). The final example of courage is Pearl herself. She is symbolically the piece of sand. Being raised under Hester’s care, Pearl’s nature is an embodiment that she is not wanted by her community and only loved by her mother. Pearl shows great courage by not conforming to the expectations of those around her. Yes, she is sometimes very demonic-like (Hawthorne 126), but she is not a coward like her father.
